Beale performed six shows to a packed crowd of friends, devoted fans of the 1975 documentary and, reportedly, luminaries like Andy Warhol and Truman Capote. She was a wonderful performer, and she sang songs and then put little bits of her life in between the songs, and so on,” says Muffie Meyer, who co-edited and co-directed Grey Gardens. “The audience was obviously predisposed to love her, but she was completely charming and it was a huge success.” Those who knew her believe it was one of the greatest periods of her life. She found fulfillment, however, in the unexpected and utterly unique years that came next. Inside the untold story of Jackie Kennedy's most unusual relative and her incredible second act.

In another, she indulges in a predilection for showboating that had her singing along to “Tea for Two” as the record played. Little Edie seems to seethe with contempt for the situation she’s found herself in and the mother who requires so much of her. The Maysles were introduced to the Edies through Radziwill and quickly knew they’d found a subject they couldn’t walk away from. They were fascinated by the pair’s faded glamour and uniquely intense—some would say dysfunctional—mother-daughter relationship and began filming Grey Gardens in 1973. "Maybe it isn't the way it was originally, but it isn't out of keeping with houses from that time period," Lange says.

After an extended marital separation, Phelan Beale notified Edith of their divorce around 1946 by telegram from Mexico. Phelan provided Edith with an allowance of $300 (equivalent to $5,000 in 2023) per month to maintain the property, herself and her daughter Edith Bouvier Beale, who was commonly known as "Little" Edie. Phelan's financial support eventually ceased and the two Ediths lost contact with him. The house and garden fell into disrepair and were overtaken by nature due to the lack of funds. The two women continued to inhabit the house, where they kept a large number of feral cats and wild animals. It seemed like such a headache that Quinn's friends and loved ones even staged an intervention, but she was determined to finish.

The open entry hall anchored by the grand staircase reflects traditional English halls. Other interior features include oak paneled walls, richly carved wood and stonework, and decorative plasterwork. This San Marino estate has a storied history and long-term protection through a Conservancy easement. It was built by a man named John Ehn in the 1940s as part of his western-themed motel (called the Old Trapper's Lodge). Today it’s a landmarked collection of weird Old West art surrounded by trees and trails.

They practically lived at the mansion and resorted to wearing flea collars around their ankles to keep the bugs at bay. The home was built in the early 1900s and had been lived in the entire time, so not everything was from the same period. "There was some stuff from the 1920s and then '30s and then '40s. So there was an eclectic mix of stuff, which made it more fun. The furniture [left in the house] was all old, and not all of it was fabulous antiques," she explained.

As the footage shows, renovations included installing proper plumbing and heat in a couple of the rooms upstairs, painting over old wallpaper, and essentially bringing the house up to code just enough to pass an inspection. Shortly into the process, the filmmakers decided they had found three stars (the third being the house itself). Radziwill's movie was scrapped (it was released as That Summer in 2018), and the focus shifted onto Big and Little Edie, who were more than happy to deliver Oscar-worthy performances. In 1971, the town of East Hampton ordered a raid on Grey Gardens, which many considered uninhabitable, and argued that it was a safety hazard. The Suffolk County Board of Health mandated that the Beales clean up Grey Gardens and threatened to evict them if they didn't.

Beautiful and vibrant, Little Edie had a lot in common with her mother, including a passion for literature, theater, and performing. She also faced similar scrutiny for these qualities and was raised to believe that her primary value was her marriageability, as she'd need a husband to support her. Throughout the '40s, she continued living in Manhattan, occasionally visiting her mother in East Hampton, and even had a stint in Palm Beach.

Opt for drought-tolerant plants such as succulents, cacti, California natives, and Mediterranean species that require less water and can thrive in the city’s dry climate. Living in Los Angeles, you’ll find a multitude of community gardens nestled in various Los Angeles neighborhoods. These gardens provide green spaces for local residents to connect, grow their own food, and foster a sense of community. Typically managed by neighborhood associations or nonprofit organizations, these community gardens offer urban dwellers a unique opportunity to get their hands dirty and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of gardening. For decades, Grey Gardens has belonged to Sally Quinn, the journalist, and Ben Bradlee, the longtime executive editor of The Washington Post who died in 2014.

It’s the characters, Big Edie and especially Little Edie, whose legacies remain in celluloid, untouched by time. Things went on like this until 1972 when the ladies of Grey Gardens got some attention—much of it unwanted. Due to complaints from neighbors, the New York Board of Health and the ASPCA raided the home and cited it for clean up or tear down. Reporters got wind of this and the “Kennedy Connection” and soon the papers were running stories about the deplorable conditions at Grey Gardens contrasted with Jackie Onassis’s lavish lifestyle. At the same time Jackie’s sister, Lee Radziwell, who ran with the artistic jet set, was working with Peter Beard, Andy Warhol, and the filmmakers the Maysles Brothers on a movie about her childhood memories of the Hamptons. Although Jackie funded much of the repair and renovation, Lee rolled up her sleeves and actually supervised the project.

The Edies, a mother-daughter pair whose deep eccentricity—and the squalor of their life in a crumbling East Hampton mansion—made Grey Gardens such a hit, were no more. In 1972, the Suffolk County, New York Health Commission issued a notice of eviction, stating the Beales would be unable to live in the house until it was cleaned and basic utilities restored. Other owners included Ben Bradlee and Sally Quinn, who lived in the house from 1979 to 2014, and extensively restored it after moving in. As for the future, Lange can't imagine renovating any other parts of the home, but the idea of redecorating isn't off the table.

Spanning more than 4,300 acres, Griffith Park is one of the largest urban parks in North America and home to some of L.A.'s most popular attractions, including the Los Angeles Zoo, Autry Museum of the American West, and the Greek Theatre. Tucked away on a steep hill in Griffith Park, Amir's Garden is a labor of love enjoyed by hikers and equestrians alike. The five-acre garden is the legacy of Amir Dialameh, who worked on the shaded grove for 32 years.

The film finds the duo living in a single room, eating liver pate and ice cream, surrounded by trash, cats, and other wildlife, including raccoons living in the walls which they fed like pets. Phelan hoped that Little Edie would find a boy from a good family and settle down, but she too had the show business bug. After various family fights, Little Edie moved back to the city, but she did not live with her father.
